About Deborah

Deborah McGuinness is a highly awarded research, computer scientist, currently working at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is a thought leader in the semantic web and how the internet functions to make modern lives easier, especially in the domains of healthcare and the environment. She is a pioneer in the topic of ontologies. Her approach is based on creating a use-case that involves input from subject matter experts in order to create a system that solves real world problems.

She has been recognized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence for outstanding contributions and leadership in the areas of ontologies, semantic web, eScience, open data, and semantic data resources. She has worked in knowledge representation and reasoning environments, and their applications, for over 35 years, leading multi-million dollar, government-sponsored research efforts, many in multi-disciplinary areas, delivering long-lived software and world class publishable results.

She is widely known for her leading role in standards development and deployment. She has held editorship and authorship roles in some of the main documents for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)’s Web Ontology Language (OWL) and provenance language (PROV) recommendations. She has built and deployed numerous knowledge environments and ontology-enhanced applications, including some that were used commercially for over a decade at AT&T and Lucent, and two that have won deployment awards for variation reduction on plant floors and interdisciplinary virtual observatories.

Her work has resulted in the publication of over 350 peer-reviewed papers and 5 books, as well as granted patents in knowledge based systems, ontology environments, configuration, and search technology. She has recently published a textbook, Ontology Engineering, with Elisa Kendall to be the definitive resource for creation and use of ontologies. You can learn more about all her publications and read her work on the Publications page.

She is a prolific and dynamic speaker for conferences, workshops, and keynotes in the semantic escience field, providing expert instruction as an authority in cutting edge, computer science, academic research. You can learn about her past and upcoming talks and think about booking her for your own event on the Presentations page.

As the CEO of McGuinness Associates, she uses her expertise to provide clients with expert witness services for litigation, Ontology development and review, research consultation for smart web applications, and planning and review board work for start up companies.
